Glossary of Terms

Bandwidth - describes the amount of traffic that your website can receive in one month. 1 Gb (gigabyte) is the equivalent of 1 million 1 kilobyte webpages.

MySQL - an internet database system.

PHP - an advanced web scripting language, PHP allows the creation of dynamic webpages with specialized content to give customers an individualized web experience

Perl - an older scripting language than PHP, Perl offers advantages of speed.

Zend Optimizer - an add-on for PHP, Zend optimizes PHP execution, giving far faster code.

Frontpage - Microsoft's general-purpose web content creation software.

Cron - a protocol allowing server jobs to be executed at specific times daily, weekly, etc.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol. FTP allows customers to upload/download software via your server.

Statistics - Web statistics track visitors to your websites. Reports are generated on a daily and monthly basis, showing who has visited your site, when they visited, and where they are from.

DirectAdmin - control panel software that allows you to log in and make changes to your website. Add email account, subdomains, and other functions provided by the hosting package you have purchased.

Webmail - Allows you to read your email from any computer, anywhere. Hotmail and Yahoo!Mail are examples of webmail applications.

Email Alias - Create additional email addresses that send email to one pre-defined address. For example all mail sent to sales@example.com should be send directly to mark@example.com

Catch All Mailbox - very often, your company wishes to have emails for customerservice@example.com , webmaster@example.com , help@example.com . Catch All mailboxes will direct messages for all addresses to one mailbox. (Unfortunately, spammers will be able to send messages to GeorgeBush@example.com )
